Dachshund

A Doxie is a lively breed who enjoys being active by playing and going for walks. Can we talk about how adorably cute a Dachshund puppy is? Their little faces and bodies just make one’s heart melt. Be aware, because they know they’re cute, so they will try and manipulate you when it comes to getting their way. Stand firm, and show them who runs the show.

  • Very loyal, and loves to be in their owner’s company
  • Vulnerable to injury, and must have activities supervised
  • Perfect for apartment living because of their small size

How long do Dachshunds live?

On average, a Dachshund dog lives anywhere between 12 to 15 years. Even with health issues, they can have a long lifespan, but Miniature Dachshunds can live up to the age of sixteen.

Do Dachshunds shed?

Dachshunds come in three types of coats. They come in smooth, wire, and long haired. A long haired Dachshund sheds the most out of the three. Both the wire and long haired ones shed twice a year, while a smooth haired Dachshund sheds throughout the year.

Are Dachshunds hypoallergenic?

Simply put, no. They’re considered a moderate-shedding breed. When it comes to allergy sufferers, the wire haired Dachshund is your best bet when it comes to owning this type of pup because they don’t shed as much as the other two types.

Are Dachshunds smart?

Dachshunds are of average intelligence. Because of their stubborn streak, they rank lower than other dogs when it comes to their intelligence. This is due to them not wanting to cooperate when it comes to obedience training.

Are Dachshunds good with kids?

In general, yes, they’re good with kids, but it should be noted that they’re a delicate breed, especially when it comes to their backs. Sometimes, kids can be unknowingly rough when they’re interacting with dogs. Dachshunds are of a small stature, so roughhousing or even picking them up wrongly can be a bad idea. If the kids handle them responsibly, a Doxie is a loving and friendly family dog.

How big do Dachshunds get?

Dachshunds are available in two sizes. Those being, Standard and Miniature Dachshunds. The mini can be anywhere from 5-7 inches in height, and 12-13 in length, and a Standard Dachshund measures somewhere around 8-9 inches in height, and 16-17 inches in length.

Are Dachshunds aggressive?

Doxies can be an aggressive breed, but with proper training, some of their behavior can be controlled. They tend to become aggressive when fear arises, or when they’re in pain, they feel anxious or they’re bored.

How much do Dachshunds weigh?

An adult Standard Doxie can weigh around 16-32 pounds, and the ideal weight for a Mini Doxie is 11 pounds.

When do Dachshunds stop growing?

Typically, Dachshunds stop growing around eight months. They’ll fill out when it comes to their weight and height before they reach a year old.

How to potty train a Dachshund?

In order to potty train a Dachshund, keep in mind, they’re not the easiest breed to train. Patience, consistency, and keeping a routine are always key throughout. It’s also best to never scold them for any accidents they may have, and to both praise and reward them when they do go. As an owner, you need to check for any signs that they may need to use the bathroom. Those include, whining, whimpering, and walking around in circles. It’s also good to take them out for walks every two hours, and to the same location. Puppy pads are also a great idea.
